Three Teens From Long Island Impress Beyond Their Years

August 6, 2018

Sons of Sound – from right, Ben Goldsmith, Ben Bustamante and James Bandini, recently took the stage at KJ Farrell’s in Bellmore:

Sons of Sound, School of Rock Bellmore

The three member rock group met at Bellmore’s School of Rock where they continue to learn and hone their impressive musical skills.

The trio consists of 12-year-old guitarist and vocalist Ben Goldsmith, of Merrick; 14-year-old Ben Bustamante, of Valley Stream, on drums; and 15-year-old Bandini, of Oceanside, on bass. At the KJ Farrell show, the pressure of being young musicians kept the atmosphere tense for the band, they said, but they took the stage with confidence.

“We were once told we’re too young for the blues,” said bassist James Bandini. “We’re gonna play it anyway.”

“I know these kids have a future in music,” said Gingee Bustamante, Ben’s mother. “They eat, sleep and breathe music. They were born with it. It’s in their DNA.”

Because of their age, the musicians have noted times when they were underrated. “Some people think we’re just cute little kids playing guitars,” Goldsmith said.

“More Than Me,” a song on Goldsmith’s solo EP, is about that struggle for recognition. In the lyrics, Goldsmith expresses frustration because he is judged based on his age before he showcases his musical abilities. Music carries more meaning than the artists’ ages, he said.

The members of Sons of Sound are planning to record and release their own EP and will return to Merrick and Bellmore for future performances.

Andrew Garcia wrote a terrific story about the band for the Long Island Herald. Please check out his article. Click here:,105763

Mr. Twin Sister Releases “Echo Arms”

August 2, 2018

This band from Long Island has long been cult heroes on the indie scene, and it’s easy to see why with their latest release:

Long Island band Mr. Twin Sister

The words “summer single” is open for interpretation in terms of aesthetic, but in the hands of Mr. Twin Sister, their chilled-out disco may as well be definitive.

According to their Wikipedia page, Mr. Twin Sister, (formerly Twin Sister), is an American band from Long Island. Their music has been described as chill wave, indie pop, dream pop, and disco. Simply, I’d describe it as original and quite good.

They’ve been compared to Cocteau Twins and Portishead as well.

The band has toured the United Stages and parts of Europe and have so far released three EPs and two LPs.

The group consists of singer Andrea Estella, keyboardist Dev Gupta, bassist Gabe D’Amico, guitarist-singer Eric Cardona, and drummer Bryan Ujueta.

The band started back in 2008 when the five members of Twin Sister came together to work on Vampires With Dreaming Kids.

Next, they relocated to Brooklyn where they built up a small but loyal following. Their EP ‘Color Your Life’ was released on Domino Records in the UK, and Infinite Best here in the United States.

Their song “All Around And Away We Go” was voted number 59 in 2010 by Pitchfork Media tracks of the year poll, and they were voted number 3 in the ‘Best hope for 2011′ section of the reader’s poll.

Here are some additional tidbits about the band:

  • The 2012 hip-hop hit ‘The Recipe’ by Kendrick Lamar featuring Dr. Dre and produced by Scoop Deville samples Twin Sister’s song ‘Meet the Frownies’.

  • In 2014, Andrea Estella replaced Leighton Meester as Carrie Bishop in the Kickstarter funded Veronica Mars Movie.

Here’s a link to their single – “Echo Arms”:
