Long Islanders Who Reached No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 Chart

July 31, 2018

Starting Tuesday at 12 noon, SiriusXM Satellite Radio (Ch. 3) celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Billboard top 100 chart by playing in order, each number 1 song beginning from the chart’s 1958 debut until today:

Long Islanders on the top 100 billboard chart

Ricky Nelson’s “Poor Little Fool.” was first, however Nelson wasn’t from Long Island. Nevertheless, there have been 10 locals who’ve hit the top spot.

Andy Edelstein, of Newsday wrote a comprehensive story about the ten. While each of us already know that Billy Joel and Joan Jett have deep roots on Long Island, I learned about others including, Gary U.S. Bonds.

And did you know that Mariah Carey, a Harborfields High School grad has 18 number one hits? And she’s currently tied with Elvis Presley at 18, and is just two shy of the Beatles, who have the most number one hits.

Here’s a link to the Newsday story (note: a subscription to Newsday may be required for viewing)

N.Y. Islander Alum Mark Parrish Played Guitar With Nickelback at Recent Concert

July 26, 2018

Parrish got to live out a dream and play on stage with the well-known band:

Nickelback and Mark Parrish

Nickelback is no small-town band, and this wasn’t a local bar with a handful of patrons. Give credit to Parrish who is used to playing in front of packed arenas; just not with a musical instrument.

Parrish got up on stage and played “Animals” with the rock band on stage Sunday evening in Minnesota.

The retired NHL player was a 30 goal scorer and did a solid job with this song (see video below). Animals came out in 2005 and was on the album “All The Right Reasons”. That means that when Nickelback was in the studio recording this song, Parrish was putting up 24 goals with the Islanders in the regular season (and playing some of the same arenas that Nickelback has played).

Parrish scored over 200 goals in his NHL career, and his best year came in 2001-2002 when he had 60 points for the Islanders.

These days Parrish is still on Long Island, and serves as a part-time announcer for MSG. He does a very good job covering the games for the Islanders.

Check Out This Trio

July 24, 2018

This three-piece harmony-driven group from Long Island, brings a rich and heartfelt sound to their stand-out original songs and spirited cover interpretations:

Long Island's own He-Bird, She-Bird

In June 2017, the three-member group, He-Bird, She-Bird released their self-titled debut album.

The band frequently plays on Long Island, and thanks to their website and facebook page are easy to find.

Here’s some background on the three members, according to their website:

Todd Evans is a longtime advocate and curator of live local music and a director of The Bluegrass Club of Long Island (BCLI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The first band he performed with was The Clam Diggers in fifth grade, and many years later, he continues to learn through several music-related projects and configurations. Ask him what his musical approach is and he’ll tell you, “If you listen real closely to the song, it’ll tell you what to do.”

California native Terri Hall has studied piano, voice, and saxophone, and has sung with every choir and chorus that would have her. After moving east, she got up out of the alto section and began playing and singing at local jams, where she found her musical soul mates. A natural-born storyteller, Terri holds a degree in History with an emphasis in Ethnomusicology; she has set her sights on giving a TED Talk.

Christine Kellar has been transfixed and transported by vocal harmonies for as long as she can remember. She enjoys writing songs and charting vocal arrangements, and aims one day to publish choral pieces and stage a children’s musical. Among her previous musical projects is Dance on the Planet, an album of original children’s music.

Here’s a video from the band:

It’s turning out to be quite a summer for Long Island songwriter and singer Sammi Rae Murciano. She’ll be playing concerts all over the Island during July and August:

Sammi Rae Murciano

On July 28, 2018, Murciano is scheduled to appear at the Jones Beach Bandshell in Wantagh at 8 p.m.

Her next appearance will be on August 3, when she performs at the Long Beach Film Festival at 5 p.m., and then on August 9th, Murciano will be performing at Adventureland in Farmingdale from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Then on September 8th she will be singing at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington, New York.

Although she has been singing for only four years, she’s the “real deal”. A recent review by Digital Journal wrote – “Her breathy vocals are expressive, and reminiscent of a young Demi Lovato”, and for Murciano, singing is her passion.”

Murciano’s EP The Story is available on iTunes.

Here’s the video for her song “Reflection”:
