While these performances are not technically taking place on “Long Island”, neighboring Long Island City will be the site of several musical performances for one long day this summer as part of a citywide celebration of music:

Long Island City musical events

The events, (all free), are organized by the non-profit, Make Music New York. Please note, while some of the events will be held in near-by Long Island city, there are also performances throughout the five New York city boroughs. Each year on this special day, June 21, musical events are scheduled.

June 21st is the chosen day because it’s the summer solstice and longest day of the year. For its 12th year, the non-profit organization has over 400 events featuring more than 5,000 musicians and artists.

Six events have been planned in Long Island City this year; at art centers, book stores, public streets, bars, and other places too.

The first scheduled event in Long Island city will begin at 3:30 p.m – a pop and indie-rock performance at AlterWork Studios, located at 30-09 35th Ave., followed by music from a punk and electronic artist wrapping up at 5:30 p.m.

At Book Culture LIC, musicians will showcase a track made with live ambient sounds from city neighborhoods for a 4 p.m. performance.

The largest event taking place in Long Island city will be the near four-hour block party on Dutch Kills Street at the intersection of Jackson Avenue, directly under the Queensboro Bridge ramp. That block party begins at 5:30 p.m., and features three musical acts ranging from hip-hop to funk, jazz, and Latin. Food and beverages will also be available at the block party.

Other events in the area include dance and music performances at Socrates Sculpture Park beginning at 6:15 p.m.
