The first-ever Islip Music Festival is planned for Sunday, August 26th, and will be held in the large parking area behind Mary Dowling’s Irish Pub & Restaurant at 528 Main Street.

Mary Dowling’s Irish Pub & Restaurant was formally known as Lilly Flanagan’s of East Islip.

The headliner band will be the legendary Zebra.

“…anyone over 35 is going to know who Zebra is,” said Richard “Kippy” Kuplen, who purchased the old Lily Flanagan’s with his brother-in-law, Joseph Frizalone, about a year ago and changed the name.

Joining Zebra will be the local Van Halen tribute band Unchained, as well as Blue Ruin with Mark Fowler of the Stanton Anderson Band.

Kuplen and Frizalone, along long-time bartender Edward “Lanny” Skehan of East Islip, were in the bar’s back parking lot approximately six months ago pondering what to do with all that space on a Sunday when the near-by Chase bank is closed, Kuplen recalled.

The brilliant idea of holding a music festival came to mind. And as we all know, putting one together with a local town’s blessing is no easy task.

So after a lot of planning and work, their town permits and other approvals are in place to hold this event properly.

“The town clerk and [Supervisor] Angie Carpenter have each been a huge help,” Kuplen said.

The festival will start at noon and continue to 6:30 p.m. Here’s the link to purchase tickets (or you can visit the Pub & restaurant and buy them there): https://www.universe.com/events/mary-dowlings-1st-annual-islip-music-festival-tickets-islip-KYDT2P

Tickets might be available at the gate, however you can save $8.00 if you buy them ahead of time. There’s no guarantee that tickets will be available the day of the event as the festival is expecting to sell all 3,000 tickets before August 26th.

WBAB will be on site and there will be plenty of food, prizes, specials, giveaways and beer offerings from Great South Bay Brewery and Clare Rose.

Part of the proceeds with go to the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.

“We think it will be a successful event with a few thousand people and hopefully we’ll be raising a lot of money for the Islip Breast Care Coalition that day,” said Kuplen.

The plan is to continue with these festivals and the organizers are hoping to have two festivals bi-annually starting in 2019 during the months of May and September.
